Global Village Perth Donates $1000 To Queensland

All of the Global Village Perth staff would like to give a big thanks to all the students that dedicated their time to this great fundraising event. We only expected gold coins to be donated but the generosity of our international student community was overwhelming.  We had hairdressers from Italy and Japan cutting and styling hair.  Chinese and Taiwanese students drawing body tattoos, Daniel and Tobias from Switzerland selling kisses for a gold coin donation (they didn’t do very well!).  The day finished with an excellent BBQ on the beach.  Well done to current and graduated students for all their hard work.

And the well-earned BBQ

That continued on into the evening……..

Hi my name is Felicity! I’ve just started at the front desk of GV Perth.  I qualified as a high school Italian/History teacher in 2010 but this job is even better. I’m very lucky to be working so close to the beach and every day I feel like I am travelling with all the different students coming through:) I am Australian but have studied Italian and Greek at University and travelled overseas. Come say hi, I am always happy to help out!

Fabulous International Lunch! Festival for the Pre-Intermediate Class

The 17th of March was a very special day for the Pre-Intermediate Class at Global Village-Perth because we had an “International Lunch” Food Festival where each student made a traditional dish from their country. And because we have students from quite a few different countries in our class (i.e., Korea, Switzerland, Japan and Taiwan) we had a great variety of dishes to sample.

The idea for the food festival was thought of by Sam, who is our teacher. She wanted to know about the traditional food from her students’ countries so she suggested that everyone make a traditional dish. She also suggested that everyone bring in the recipe for the dish they made to share with everyone.

There was a great variety of foods both savoury and sweet. From Korea, we got to try Kimbab (sushi) made by Joy & Jiny, Kimchi fried rice by Tommy and Glen, rice balls created by Woo, boiled rice cakes by Su, dumplings bought and heated up by Clark, and roasted sweet potato and honey by Selina! From Taiwan, we sampled sweet vingear meat made by Kirk, homemade dumplings by Vivi and a pasta salad by Wen. The Swiss team of Flavia, Daniel and Petrina made “Gehadetes & Hornli” (spiced mince meat & ‘horn’ pasta) while Vincent made bruschetta. Yasuko, from Japan, made Nikujaga and Sam, from America, made Oreo Cookie Truffles.

During the festival, we interviewed Daniel and asked him what the meaning of this festival was. He said, “through this festival we can become closer to each other and understand each others’ cultures more deeply.”

The festival ended perfectly all of the food was eaten and everyone helped clean up!
