Hello from Rie~!

GV Perth has a chat with Japanese student Rie Nakagawa about school and her life after she finished studying English in Perth last month ~

[Above – Rie with her classmates Fabienne and Helen from Switzerland]

GVP: How did you hear about GV Perth, and why did you decide to study here? Do you like the school?

Rie: GV Perth I learned from a friend had recommended. Then I asked the agent.

I really love GV Perth. The teachers are kind and was very friendly. Class environment is also very good. I thought good, because in small school, small classes, to improve my English. And near the sea where there was very good.

GVP: How have you been settling into living in Perth? Are you living in a Sharehouse or homestay? How are you finding living here?

Rie: Lived two months in Perth.  Homestay one month, sharehouse one month. The homestay agent found for me. My Share house the school principal (Neil) has introduced to me.

GVP: Do you enjoy your classes? What do you think of your teacher? Do you like the activities?

Rie: I really enjoyed my class. Teacher speaking English very clear. English is difficult for me, teacher explained many times that I know. Daily activities was very fun. Let me experience a wide variety.

GVP: How long are you studying at GV Perth? Do you have plans to work or travel after finishing your course?

Rie: I attended school for eight weeks. Then continue to study English and travel to work. I wants to attend a school once again during travel.

Now, me & my friend Kyeongri live in caravan park in Margaret River. We were picking grapes everyday!! Outside job was very hot and hard but we are enjoy new experience 😉

Vocabulary Top Tip!

Here’s some great vocabulary tips from Justin, the DOS at GV Byron Bay.

Hi Guys, As the Cambridge exams are nearing now is the time to really sit down and learn as much vocabulary as you possibly can. I thought I’d share one good technique to help you. The keyword method can be used in a wide variety of situations and has a range of helpful applications. One very useful application for using the keyword technique is to use it for learning vocabulary.

This technique can be seen as a four part process.

The keyword technique can help you to remember vocabulary you might otherwise forget. For example, if you need to remember that barrister is another word for lawyer, first create a keyword for the unfamiliar word, barrister. Remember, a keyword is a word that sounds like the new word and is easily pictured. A good keyword for barrister could be a bar (as in where people drink together).

Create a picture of the keyword and the definition doing something together. Make the most interesting picture you can think of where the two words interact. For example, a picture of a lawyer sitting having a few drinks in a bar in his white wig could be an easy way to remember these two words! Any image that is fun and that you can remember is fine!

Give it a go! There has been lots of research into vocabulary acquisition and for higher level learners this has been proven to be very successful!

Thanks Justin!

GV Perth goes SURFING!!

An amazing number of students (73 in total!) signed up to get wet this week and learn how to surf with the friendly team at GO SURF 🙂

Due to the large number of students, the lessons were conducted over a period of three days, Wednesday 23rd, Thursday 24 and Friday 25th of February.

Wednesday was a bright, sunny day with perfect conditions the students certainly made the most of it! Thursday was hot, humid and cloudy – the ocean was the only place to stay cool… 🙂

Frequently asked questions about Cambridge Exam Preparation Courses

Many of our Cambridge Students have questions about their courses and our teachers always take the time to answer these. To make life simpler, we have made the following  fact sheet for you.

The Cambridge classes for March are filling up quickly so if you intend to take an internal assessment test, please speak to Neil, Ursula, Stephanie or Stuart now.

 1. Why take a Cambridge Examination? Cambridge qualifications enjoy a very high level of international recognition both by universities and employers as evidence of the appropriate standards in English. Questions and tasks are based on meaningful language and real-life activities so the language studied is useful outside the classroom. All written papers are returned to the UK for marking to ensure worldwide standardisation and reliability. The four language skills are tested separately but averaged across the papers allowing strengths to balance weaknesses. All exams include a live paired interview with two examiners, all of whom are trained, standardised and experienced. Over 500,000 candidates each year worldwide.

2. Am I eligible? Cambridge Examinations may be taken by people of any age, race or nationality, but are specifically designed for speakers of languages other than English. Young candidates (under 16) should seek advice from the Cambridge Examinations office.

3. Do I have to attend a course to be able to sit a Cambridge Examination? No. However it is a good idea to prepare thoroughly for the examinations and this may be best achieved by attending a preparation course. Global Advice and sample papers can be found on the Cambridge ESOL Candidate Support website.

4. Which examination should I take? The best way to decide is to talk to your GV teacher about your level of English. You can try doing some practice tests to see how you go.

5. Can I enrol for a Cambridge Course at GV Perth? Yes you can! Just speak to any of our staff and they will point you in the right direction.

 6. Can I enrol now and pay later? No. Payment is required at the time of enrolment. We do not accept or process enrolments without proof of payment.

7. Can I enter for more than one exam at the same time? Yes. However you must complete a separate entry form for each exam and pay a separate fee. N.B. The FCE and CAE exams are held on the same day in August, so you may not enter for both exams.

8. Can I transfer my entry from one session to a later one or to a different level, or to a different city in Australia? No.

9. Can I withdraw or cancel my enrolment and receive a refund? There are no refunds once enrolment is complete and a receipt issued, as your examination papers will be sent from Cambridge and back again even if you do not sit the examination. If you have an illness and a medical certificate to show this, you may be able to receive a partial refund (see Terms and Conditions). Refunds are at the discretion of the Centre Exams Manager.

10. Can I give my place to someone else? No. No candidate may be substituted for another.

11. Will all the examinations offered run every session? If there are not enough candidates entered for an examination after the closing date for enrolments that examination may not run. If this is the case, you will be offered a full refund.

12. If I do not pass can I sit the examination again at another time? Yes. There is no limit to the number of times you can sit the same examination, and a fail in any examination will not be recorded on any future Statements of Results, but you must enrol and pay the exam fee each time.

13. How long do I have to wait for my results and certificate? Candidates can access their results online approximately 6 weeks after the examinations, and the certificates are dispatched about 4 weeks after the results are published. The certificates are sent to GV Perth for their candidates, and to home addresses for private candidates.

14. What if I’m leaving Australia before I receive my certificate? If you would like your certificate delivered to an overseas address, please give your details to your teacher at GV Perth. .If you are a private candidate, you will have to pay a small extra fee to cover the cost of the secure overseas delivery.

15. What do I do if I don’t receive my certificate? Please note that only candidates who pass their examination will receive a certificate. If you don’t receive your certificate within two months of receiving your results, please contact GV Perth as we are responsible for sending them to you and will do so by secure mail. For private candidates, please contact the Cambridge Examinations office.

16. What do I do if I lose my certificate? If you lose your certificate after you have received it, please contact Cambridge in the UK direct. You must pay a fee to have it replaced. If it has been more than 12 months since you sat the examination, you may not receive a certificate. In this case, you can apply for a Certifying Statement of your grade.

Insight from Daniel. One of our happy CAE students….

Hi Daniel, how did you hear about GV Perth and why did you decide to study here?

Well, I decided to study here because of the location (right next to the beach) and I was a GV Byron Bay student before.  GV has a great reputation for quality and that was important.  I love it here!

How have you been settling into living in Perth? Are you living in a homestay or a sharehouse?

Ha, I was kind of homeless for a couple of nights because my homestay finished and I hadn’t quite sorted out a sharehouse.  The GV staff staff helped me as much as they could and now I have a fantastic sharehouse near to the school in a brand new house.  It’s amazing.

Do you enjoy your classes and the activities.

Yes I do!- Every day there is a different activity after class so we never get a chance to be bored.  I’m looking forward to more surfing lessons and BBQ’s of course.  My academic class is challenging but very rewarding.

How long have you been studying at GV Perth and where are you going afterwards?

I’m in week 6 of a 10 week CAE course.  I know I will pass.  Then I am off to Thailand for a holiday.  I will be back to Perth.  The weather is amazing and the people are all so friendly.  I’m from Spain and I know lots of my friends are going to want to come here too.  It really is like a home away from home.

Thanks Dan for all your positive thoughts.  If anyone else would like to have a say on the blog please speak to your teacher or Student Services.  Have a great day in WA!

For any Director of Studies there is nothing that makes us more proud to announce that our Cambridge Advanced English students all passed their exams and now hold one of the most recognised certificates in English.

A few of the Cambridge students unwinding after their exams.

The picture above says it all.  Unwinding after the exam is all part of the life at GV Perth.  Serious study and serious fun!

The international enrolments for the Cambridge courses starting in March are coming in fast and furious.  If you would like to take an in-house academic test to check your level and suitability for the course, please talk to me (Neil) and we will organise a time for this after class.

Thanks for reading!
