Meet our Hospitality student, Sandro!

We spoke to Sandro about what it’s like studying for the Hospitality II Certificate here at Lexis and living in Perth!

1. How long have you been studying at Lexis? I started here six years ago studying English and now I’ve been studying hospitality since January.
2. Which country are you from? Switzerland
3. What’s your favourite learning tip? Avoid people who speak your language. I did that when I came here and when I met someone who came from my country I told them I spoke another language. The students figured out many months later!

4. What’s the best thing about living in Perth? The weather, the beach and people are very friendly here.
5. What’s the hospitality course like? It’s very interesting. I’ve learned many things there such as food contamination. I apply many things that I’ve learnt to real life. For example, I now know not the cut chicken and veggies on the same board!
6. What’s the funniest thing that’s happened to you on the course? One time we were making juices and we accidently added too much ginger and the people liked it!
7. What’s your favourite English word? Cheers!!!!
8. Which activity do you enjoy the most in your hospitality class? Role plays where we get to be both the customer and staff.

9. If you had to pick another Lexis campus to study in, which one would you choose? Kobe in Japan.
10. What’s the most useless talent you have? I’m great at making paper planes.
11. Would you rather fight one horse-sized duck, or 100 duck-sized horses? 100 duck sized horses because they’re smaller! I know that when a duck bites it hurts! We have a lot of ducks in Switzerland.
12. What was the last gift you gave someone? A bottle of wine!
13. What’s the best thing about the hospitality course? The contact with people. Working at the Lexis café is great!
14. What do you miss the most about your home country? The food, of course!
15. If your best friend had to describe you in one word, what would it be? The best!
16. What is the dumbest way you have been injured? When I was a kid I was running in a furniture shop and I fell down and my head hit the pointy corner of a bed.
17. Where will your next holiday be? In Japan
18. What would your perfect party look like? On a boat, with a sunset
19. What is your spirit animal? I was born at the end of July, so of course, a lion!
20. What song do you know all the lyrics to? The complete lyrics? – no song.
21. If you could pass on any advice to a beginner hospitality student, what would it be? Don’t forget the ginger!

Congratulations to Michelle on completing her Certificate III in Business

Michelle came to collect her Certificate III in Business certificate today and we asked her a few questions….

  1. What was the best things about the course? The teacher, she was very helpful and tried her hardest to get me through the course.
  2. What is next for you? I am heading back to Malaysia to my home town Kuala Lupur where I have a new job. I am going to be working in a talent production company where I will be working with film, photography, modelling and show casting.
  3. Did the Certificate III help you get the job? Yes I believe it has been helpful in securing me the new job in K.L. I was planning on staying in Perth longer to do a Diploma course at Lexis but this opportunity has come up so I have decided to take it.
  4. What was the best thing about Perth? Perth is a convenient city, as it is close to Asia and it has great beaches and the people are really friendly.

Thanks Michelle for answering a few questions. We wish you all the best on your return home and hope that one day you will come and visit us again at Lexis Perth and share stories about your new job!

Michelle LTTC

Meet our wonderful teacher Sarah

Get to know our wonderful teacher Sarah who you will have seen during the day and also in the evening classes.

1. How long have you been working at Lexis? About a year
2. Which class do you teach? Evening Pre-Intermediate, Elementary and Upper intermediate
3. Have you taught English overseas? If yes, where? Yes, I taught in a high school in Bangkok, Thailand for a year in 2013. It was an incredible experience!
4. What’s your favourite learning tip? Always be reading a book! Reading is SO important! Ask me for book suggestions, I have tons.
5. If you had to pick another Lexis campus to work in, which one would you choose? I guess I’d choose Brisbane- because I imagine it’s the most similar to Perth.

6. What’s the best thing about living in Perth? Perth has the perfect balance of culture and nature. I can meet people from all over the world, head to the beach for a surf, go hiking in a regional park, or escape for the weekend to a campsite down south.
7. What’s the funniest thing that’s happened to you while teaching? My young students in Thailand hijacked the speaker during a grammar lesson, played “Gangnam Style”, and started dancing on their chairs. True story.
8. What’s your favourite English word? Do I have to choose just one? I love the word “nostalgia”: a sentimental yearning for the happiness of a former place or time. Some other words in my top ten are: ambiguous, insightful, intriguing, indulgent, eloquent, dapper, cheeky, nasty, and creepy.
9. Which activity do you think students enjoy the most in your classes? Activities involving music are always popular. I try to choose great music that uses the week’s grammar… so students don’t even notice they’re learning.
10. What’s the most useless talent you have? I can tell you anything you want to know about the evolution of animals on the earth, as I studied evolutionary biology at university.
11. Would you rather fight one horse-sized duck, or 100 duck-sized horses? A horse-sized duck for sure, because ducks have one important weakness… bread.
12. What was the last gift you gave someone? Today I gave my students the “gift” of knowledge!
13. What’s the best thing about being a teacher? Being able to have fun while helping others expand their horizons. That, and meeting people from all over the world.
14. If you were to be given a superlative when you were in school, what would it have been? Most likely to do everything at the last minute but still get an A on the test.
15. What is the dumbest way you have been injured? Falling up the stairs.
16. Where will your next holiday be? Hopefully Venice, Italy to see my husband’s family.
17. What would your perfect party look like? A 1920s-themed vegetarian banquet at the home of Jay Gatsby, as played by Leonardo DiCaprio in the 2013 film adaptation. It would be attended by J.K. Rowling, Melissa McCarthy, Trevor Noah, Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, the Obamas, Bernie Sanders, all of my family, friends and students. We would drink champagne and dance to instrumental swing and jazz.
18. What is your spirit animal? A lion, because they’re a bit funny and kind of cute, but they’re also fierce. And the females are in charge!
19. What song do you know all the lyrics to? Uptown Funk by Bruno Mars and Thrift Shop by Macklemore. Anything by Alanis Morisette.
20. How do you think students will remember you and your class? I hope they’ll remember having a good laugh everyday (except maybe Mondays), supporting each other and working together as a class. And how far they improved from their first day!
